Things to Do in Jamaica
Waterfalls, rivers, mountains and music, from Montego Bay to Kingston.
See top-rated activities »About Jamaica
There are more things to do in Jamaica than on almost any other Caribbean island, because it is big, mountainous and full of rivers. Most visitors stay along the north coast, in Montego Bay, Ocho Rios or Negril, and the island's best-known sights are spread along that shore and in the hills behind it. Kingston, the capital on the south coast, is the place for music history and city life.
Near Ocho Rios, Dunn's River Falls is the classic outing: visitors climb the terraced limestone falls hand in hand with a guide, from the beach at the bottom to the road at the top, in water shoes and swimwear. In the hills above town, the Blue Hole, also called Island Gully Falls, has clear pools for swimming and jumping. Nearby, rivers run down through the forest, and bamboo raft trips on the Martha Brae River near Falmouth drift slowly downstream with a raft captain poling. At night, the Luminous Lagoon at Falmouth glows when the water is disturbed, thanks to microscopic organisms.
Around Montego Bay, Rose Hall Great House is a restored 1770s plantation house known for the legend of its mistress, Annie Palmer, and tours tell of both the legend and the enslaved people who worked the estate. Doctor's Cave Beach is the town's best-known beach. To the west, Negril has Seven Mile Beach and, at the West End, cliffs where Rick's Cafe has drawn crowds for sunset and cliff jumping since 1974. Inland in the southwest, YS Falls has a series of cascades and pools set in gardens.
In Kingston, the Bob Marley Museum occupies the singer's former home and studio at 56 Hope Road, and Devon House is a nineteenth-century mansion with gardens and a famous ice cream shop. Above the city, the Blue Mountains rise to more than 7,000 feet and produce the island's prized coffee; the Blue and John Crow Mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nine Mile, in the hills of St. Ann, is where Bob Marley was born and is buried.

What is the best area to stay in Jamaica?
Montego Bay for easy airport access and resorts, Ocho Rios for waterfalls and rivers, Negril for a long beach and sunsets, and Kingston for music and culture. Many visitors combine two.
Can anyone climb Dunn's River Falls?
Most reasonably fit people can, with a guide and water shoes. The rocks are slippery, so go early to avoid crowds and keep valuables in a waterproof bag or at your hotel.
Is it safe to tour Jamaica?
Most visitors tour with licensed guides and transport, which is the simplest approach. Follow local advice, avoid isolated areas at night and check your government's current travel advisory.
